A marker float is an essential piece of kit for finding out about your water. A marker is setup up running on a line with a lead at the end of the line and a soft bead or two to buffer the float against the lead.
By paying out the line foot by foot once the lead and loat have sunk it is possible to guage depth.
By pulling the lead back gently over the ottom of the lake we are able to guage the constitution of the lake bed. For example the lead will bobble over gravel, get stuck in weed and glide smoothly over sand and mud. If the lead is stopped and takes some resistance to shift before gliding soft silt is the likely candidate.
